Our Peculiar Homemates

Our Peculiar Homemates

I want to share my home with an animal, but if you say “I'm allergic to cat, I'm not the energy to walk the dog twice a day” you can adopt animals which are unusual pets through internet. Communication with each animal is possible.
There are cats, dogs and other animals with which we can share our homes. Science now says we can communicate with all kinds of animals.

It is now possible to adopt an animal -without buying- even with a little internet research. So, you can keep yourself away from the cruel animal e-buy system by adopting these animals that are abandoned by their owners’ busy life styles. In this way, we can meet a different friend and save their lives. When you google it, you may encounter numerous posts of people who want to leave their animals because of the following popular reasons: “I'm moving abroad”, “I'm allergic to pets” “I will have a baby”. What is essential here is that you never pay money and help the cruel system feed itself. We should take into account that the majority of vets with some exceptions of a few major cities in Turkey are so focused on farm animals that they have even no idea about dogs and cats. It is useful to investigate in advance if there is a vet around us to consult about any health problem of our pets. And of course, we need to make sure that home-based feeding is not prohibited at the place where we live.

Here are a few alternatives:

Guinea Pigs

Guinea Pigs are ideal especially for those who will adopt animal for the first time.

Guinea pig is a South American domestic rodent friend of ours. It is not so timid as the hamster nor is so gentle as the rabbit. It has very few health problems and is long lasting. Since it is easy to care for, it is considered to be an ideal and friendly pet for those to adopt animals for the first time and for families with young children. It can healthily maintain its life with daily straw, fresh water, fresh vegetables, very little amount of special formula and vitamin C supplementation. It can build a good relationship with people. They communicate with their little screams, purrs like a cat when they are happy, and when they see you they can gladly perform their famous “popcorn” dance. You've got a chance to make them get on a leash and go for a walk together. Each of them has distinctive and obvious personal characteristics.

The fact that such an affectionate animal having high IQ and EQ has been subjected to all kinds of experiments in the laboratories makes our hearts sink.

Ferret

Ferrets are very intelligent, communicatively strong, friendly, curious and playful.

I was very surprised to see a ferret at Jennifer Aniston's house in the 2004 Along Came Polly film for the first time. She is a very common roommate, especially in the US. When you happen to travel internationally with your pets, there are international laws that you are subject to, and when you are searching for the conditions for your cat and your dog, you always see the following three together: Cat, dog and ferret! It is clear that there are a lot of people in the world who have ferrets and travel with them. Nevertheless, there are countries and states where feeding a ferret at home is prohibited or bound by conditions.

The ferret is an animal that needs to learn it should not bite anybody like kittens and dogs. It does not know it can hurt you while playing. Unlike the cat, it does not search for sand to make its toilet and it tends to make its toilet anywhere inside the house. So, he needs toilet training. They are very intelligent, communication-friendly, curious and playful. They are calm by nature, but at certain times of the day they can experience an explosion of energy. At such times you have to keep an eye on them not to get themselves into trouble. This is especially recommended because they need intensive human interest and communication like a dog. The more time you spend with him, the more physically and psychologically they maintain their lives.

If you have a cat or dog at home, it is recommended that you make the first introduction with ferret with the help of two people, one of whom will hold the cat or dog and the other will hold ferret. It is also recommended to gradually release them in the same environment over time. The ferret needs daily fresh water and a high nutritional ratio of fat and protein. Since special ferret food is not very common, it can be fed with cat or dog food. Many people get sick of their food and can be poisoned by many of the house plants, so it is very important to pay attention to what you eat. Actually, appropriate nutrition is equally important for all animals.

Wild City Resident

We are neighbors with many animals such as hedgehogs, turtles and seagulls.
We are neighbors with many animals such as hedgehogs, turtles and seagulls.

Our intruders! Because what we call the city is the concretes that we build here on the planet, every city has also its inhabitants other than the people of its geography. We may not be able to see the eagle in Taksim because there is no place to hunt for them. However, we are neighbor to many animals in the wild category such as pigeons, crows, hedgehogs, turtles, seagulls, swift and sparrows are the animals that we do not think we are wild because we are very familiar. We may face an injured or damaged offspring because of the accident, hunger or dehydration and we may want to help them. Nilay Tezsay, one of our veterinarians highly interested in wildlife, has a number of educational and guiding videos on YouTube. We can get help from such experts and ask for help by sending a message with the animal's video through the Facebook. We may try to reach the ministries or directorates of the forestry.

I found a baby crow who fell and broke one of its claws. It was uncertain if it could fly. Sure, I was not going to kill it. So, I build a bird-house in the balcony to stay with me life-long. In fact, I didn't have a close relationship with it so that if it can manage to fly one day, it wouldn't be bound to me. It really flew a year and a half later. Our aim is not to make them “pet”, but to help them heal as much as possible and return to their nature. However, those who cannot survive without our help and do not show health improvement can be exceptions.
